The Newlyweds by Nell Freudenberger

This was an absolutely stunning read, I couldn`t put it down and I certainly didn`t want it to finish.
It was magical in its descriptions of people and especially places, painting them so vividly that you certainly felt as if you had been there. Her characters are beautifully drawn and multi-faceted and develop throughout  the book like onion skins being delayered, they are not characters who are easy to like and most readers will form an opinion one way or the other. There are secrets and lies and twists and turns aplenty in this well paced suspenceful book that draws you so deeply into each characters orbit and it is simply amazing to look back on the reading of this book and see what appeared originally as quite simple turning into anything but.
The Two main characters are George and Amina who have met online and married when Amina travels form her home in a small village in Bangladesh to Rochester, New York where husband George lives, apparently the epitome of all things good, all things American, But nothing for these two and the characters that surround them is as simple as the surface appears and it isn`t long before stress and strain poke their heads in and life becomes quite the challenge especially when secrets charge in with resounding force and open a can of snakes as opposed to the often mention worms!
This book stretches across continents, across generations and across expectations and the heavy weight these can and do bring to those who choose to marry out of their own cultural group. and attempt that difficult challenge of making it work, so much can and does change and at the drop of a hat, how you react and what actions you take determine failure or success.
I felt that Freudenberger took me on an adventure of a life time to Bangladesh, I felt as I was right there, smelling the smells, riding in the rickshaws,climbing the stairs, bouncing along the rutted roads, sharing the meals,thwacking the mossies, trying to do the right and acceptable thing, listening for snippets of conversation...
This book is available via the library system and it is well worth placing a hold.

Heft by Liz Moore

This was a book that I loved. Well written with characters to make your heart melt, this novel centres on the lives of Arthur Opp an obese ex - Academic who hasn`t left his home in 20 odd years and Kel Keller. Life however has a way of rebounding on you through those you knew in a prior life and this is what happens in this story.. in the form of Charlene Keller an ex-student of Arthur`s whose life is riven with conflict and sadness and who maintains a connection with Arthur which leads to the dominoes that have propped up and enabled Arthur`s solitary existence to topple.
The characters in this book are beautifully drawn and resonate with all their life experiences and issues, with their understanding or lack of, with their compassion and with preternatural wisdom in the case of  Kell, Yolanda and Lindsay. Arthur is a delight and has a very big heart, even if it makes him rather uncomfortable at times and in many ways it is this discomfort that makes you understand him, each of the characters has shared experiences, and it is the entwining of these shared experiences that links them so richly to each other and enables the possibility of resolution to be brought into their lives.
Never dull, it was for me a page turner with plenty of humour, it especially brought out to me how the diversity of life experiences can build bridges.

And adventures she certainly has had! The epitome of the adage Sex, Drugs and Rock N Roll, this wonderfully talented Singer/Songwriter has lived her life to the full with all its joys and heartbreaks.
Born into a wealthy and successful family with a heaping of dysfunction in the mix, like her siblings musical and artistic talent was a given, the pathway through life should have been smooth and easy but it was not, many helping hands had very mixed motives especially when it came to the stunning Carly and the nurturing versus exploitation of her talent and her sexuality, heatbreak and misfortune have been hers.
A hard worker, a perfectionist, a very troubled and anxious young lady, Carly hit the gate running and  has kept herself very busy and us mightily entertained since the 70`s. Married to the troubled and drug addicted James Taylor, it was a coupling that brought and shared many gifts far and wide but took a tremendous personal toll on each and left both depleted and enriched for the experience though neither may see it that way.It would be hard to think of another musical coupling in modern time that has contributed so much and continues to do so.
Very easy to read, if a little blowsy in the first few chapters, the authors insider status has not harmed the book and many of the stories he shares would be publicly related for the first time here, there is however a tendency to put a few too many unrelated facts in every now and again which does detract from the narrative and there were times where one paragraph about a subject would have sufficed, there were also some issues that were raised and we can only assume they were resolved as we aren`t actually told, the person just pops back up which was slightly disconcerting. However this is is likely to be the best recounting we get of Carly Simon`s life and it more than hits the mark, the photographs and illustrations are excellent and the cover is gorgeous.
This book does much to bring the life and the work of Carly Simon and her contemporaries back into the spotlight, it honours her life and her work, shows her influences and was a thought provoker in someways... Your So Vain but who are you? and a question answerer in others..Carly look, there`s clouds in your coffee.

Midnight Champagne by A.Manette Ansay.

Manette Ansay became very well know when her book Vinegar Hill was chosen for Oprah Winfrey`s Book Club many years ago, it was a great read.
Set on the shore of Lake Michigan this book is about love and marriage, secrets and lies, life and family.
It is linked by two marriages, one just beginning and one disintegrating into horror. The proximity of one marriage and the denouement of another are linked because they are held at the same time and in the same place, characters go back and forth and intermingle in the most unexpected of ways.
The characters are richly and vibrantly drawn in all their passion, fury, bitterness and pain, they are also very funny and there are alot of laugh out loud moments. The book is divided into 6 interlinked chapters, each covering an aspect of the Wedding of Caleb and April.This is not really the wedding of April`s dreams, in fact its a little trashy but that doesn`t detract at all, it simple brings humour to the story in quite surprising ways. The writing is rather magical and the story fairly hums along, stopping now and again for breath or a secret to be revealed.This is the kind of book that once picked up, you can`t put it down, you simply can`t wait to see what unfolds or who does what and to whom, does love triumph in the end and what on earth would you do in the same situation are questions you will find yourself pondering... doing the right thing can make you feel so good when all is weighed up.

Blue Nights by Joan Didion

The writer Joan Didion knows all about grief, its many forms and its many machinations, it has struck repeatedly those she has known and loved and often at a very young age. Her husband John Gregory Dunne died at their dinner table while daughter Quintana was in the ICU Unit at John Hopkins Hospital seriously ill, Joan wrote a magnificent book called The Year of Magical Thinking which described in a heart wrenching yet beautiful, exquisite, prose the path that that first year took her down and how she survived it.
This book tells the interweaved, interconnected story of the life and early death of Quintana against the backdrop of her parents story,their shared lives and the joys, challenges, fears and overwhelming love that the adoption of Quintana brought to their lives, a life that as Joan tells it was privileged, not always easy but on balance could truly be called well lived. Although Quintana`s death at 38 could hardly be called fair and  her life certainly wasn`t long, it was packed with experiences that could only have bequeathed to her a rich tapestry on which she hoped to paint the rest of that life with her husband Gerry.
Didion`s description of how the rug was pulled out from under Quintana on the cusp of a new life, newly married and suffused with a rare happiness tells us with startling clarity how cruel the fates can be, how unexpected can be the hand of death and how powerless we really are to prevent it.
Didion paints her own portrait of loss and in words that dance on the page, they are carefully chosen and they are purposeful, many are not easy to read, their poignancy can bring tears but oh how she shares the life of Quintana with an honesty and rare bravery, she links it so beautifully with other lives ended early such as Natasha Richardson and  with the lives of family and friends many still living all who contributed, good, bad and indifferently to Quintana`s and her parents lives.  As much as she shares death, she shares life. As a young woman I wouldn`t have read or understood Joan Didion with much alacrity but now with a dose of maturity I have read her writing and been enhanced by the lessons she has shared, to say this book gets you thinking is an understatement. Would Joan Didion see herself as a Teacher of Life Lessons, probably not but she is and she has much more to share. Brilliant, touching, moving and elegant, the thought I am left with is  that as Joan writes she realises, the fear we are left with is not for what we have lost but for what we still have to lose. So true whatever our own experience.

The Real Girl Next Door by Denise Richards

Light and breezy, well written and easy to read with numerous dark turns this is Denise`s story from a delightful childhood to modelling, acting and marrying Charlie Sheen.
Denise`s life certainly didn`t take the path she imagined into happy ever after, Charlie turned out not to be a Prince after all and took Denise on an unimaginable ride through drink, drugs and prostitutes galore, the good side if there was one was that she was living in reasonable style and her hard work had given her some financial security and she had a good head on her shoulders. Denise`s life obviously then has not been a bed of roses, the early death of her mother was a dreadful blow and she has had big messes to clean up, while raising her 2 daughters by Charlie and now her newly adopted daughter.
This was a good read better than I in fact expected and very humorous in parts, I came away with great deal of respect for Denise and the way she has handled the good, the bad and the Charlie in her life! Well done, worth a read.

72 days...Mistake or Sham Candy Floss!

Way to go Kim...72 days and bang it`s all over!! There will be nothing left out as the story starts to crack open and The House of Kardashian topples over!! Kris still loves his wife... wow he must be a deluded wee thing.

The Woman`s day had a sweet, lovely interview with the vapid Sally Ridge, who it transpires feels we don`t understand her and we may be a little jealous... Look here Sister, it is perfectly alright to go out occasionally with your 20 plus daughter for a drink and some clubbing, it is not the role of any right minded mother to do this with a 16, 17 or 18 year old and allowing sleepovers with a boyfriend is not cool either... no wonder this girl is estranged from Daddy, he doesn`t approve ... the crafts column is back.

That Woman...the story of Wallis Simpson, The Duchess of Windsor by Anne Sebba

This is my second Duchess read this year and it will probably be the last for a while.
Very well written and researched with an eye for detail, this was a great read. The story of Wallis who became ensnared by the comfort, ease, elegance, and perks of being associated with Royalty and who did not realise until it was too late that her Prince`s love had grown into a full blown obsession.
Those who believed that Wallis wanted to be Queen were mistaken, the onerous call of duty was not for her, she wanted gaiety and parties, balls and jewels but not the Crown. She quite liked her second husband Ernest and it was through his family connections that both were put on the slippery slope of living beyond their means and for Wallis this proved fatal. Looking for a Mother, the Prince of Wales spied the brash,witty American from Baltimore and slowly but surely she and Ernest stepped into the magical world where everything was possible and little was denied. Shucking one mistress, Wallis stepped up to the ball park and hit a home run. The houses, castles, palaces and jewelery were amazing, so was the cook, the footman etc.. but as time swirled by Wallis began to tire of the Princes constant demands on her time and so did Ernest. It wasn`t that Wallis didn`t love the Prince, she did but she also loved her husband who could provide less but equally was less demanding and overall less needy. Extracting herself from the Prince proved impossible, Ernest sued for divorce, the Prince who was now the King balked and abdicated and eventually they married and set of on a journey that caused both much pain, the were exiles within exile. Life was not too difficult but it was boring and tedious, the HRH was denied Wallis, their duties were limited and warmth and welcome from his family was sadly lacking, blamed for the early death of King George VI, his widow while playing Sweetie Pie to the World was always eager to make sure that very little occurred in the United Kingdom regarding Wallis and David(his family name) that did not meet her stringent approval.
It was left to Paris to provide a suitable home base and both died there although both are buried at Frogmore, an ex-king and his beloved wife together on English Soil.
An excellent read, a pacy narrative and a very good understanding of both central characters and their ever changing circle of family, friends, associates and employees. Anne Sebba has dug deep in her research and come up trumps.
